I strongly recommend Captain Sonar, although I consider it a strictly 8 person game. Absolutely one of the best large player count board games.

Getting eight people together outside of a convention — that's the dream (and why I haven't played it yet.) Have you tried Sonar?

I have not, but reading the description it seems like Captain Sonar with the mechanics simplified down so only 1 person can perform all of them. I'd be interested in trying it, but I honestly have the problem that my group's board game nights usually have 5-10 people so we can never play smaller player count games. The 2-4 is a dreaded number to see on a box for me.

That's such a great problem to have! Do you ever split into groups, or do you typically focus on games that accommodate your large size?

Usually we have the one table and are all there to hang out together. So we play big player count games like Captain Sonar, Ladies and Gentlemen, When I Dream, sometimes push the limits of games like Spirit Island by combining copies. Otherwise it's party games like Monikers.
